Songs for getting older... (The Beatles, The Avett Brothers, & G.Love)

As I like to remind everyone starting around November, tomorrow is my birthday. I am always so excited when the day is coming, but as it gets closer, I start thinking a little too hard about my life. Thinking too much about one's life is never a good move. On the other side of that, I'm ready to celebrate.

In thinking about the last year and everything that has happened, I realize that some of it was pretty difficult and trying, but for the most part, this last year has been so full of surprises and cool things that I have to dub it one of the best years of my life. I go into the next year with an open mind and an open heart.
The Beatles - Birthday

I can't think of anyone other than John, Paul, George, and Ringo that would be more awesome to have sing happy birthday to you. Plus, this song totally rocks.

The Avett Brothers - All My Mistakes

As with all Avett Brothers' songs, this is beautiful and the lyrics are pure poetry. Plus, I think it's a perfect sentiment for this time of the year.

But I can't go back and I don't want to 'cause all my mistakes, they brought me to you...

G. Love - 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

This isn't exactly the best video (it just sort of dies halfway through), but this is a seriously cool cover. Take the awesomeness of Paul Simon (my writing hero) and then funk it up with some G. Love. Good times.

Songs for cruising... (Jack's Mannequin, Jakob Dylan, Wham!, & Two Door Cinema Club)

I'm sure that you probably think that title means these are songs for taking a leisurely car ride, but you are wrong. Life has been pretty crazy lately. I've spent more time in emotional tizzies than I care to admit. However, it has all sort of mellowed out, and I've found this serene state of calm and happiness. The cynic in me is screaming to delete that last statement as fast as possible before the fates hear and right my life back to the drama show fit for my silly little Pisces butt, but I'm not going to do that. I'm just going to enjoy this, close my eyes, ignore the lurking pessimism, and hope like hell that reality knocks me out when it pops back around the corner.
Jack's Mannequin - Swim

Ok, so this isn't one of my normal picks. I love dark, depressing songs about jilted lovers. I'm pretty sure that this is about this guy being optimistic through his battle with cancer. I want to make some snarky comment, but honestly, how can you? This song is pretty badass. The video is a little annoying, so just focus on the music.

Jakob Dylan - Everybody's Hurting

This m is beautiful, but when he sings, I still just want to close my eyes and get lost in that sound. His sound is a sad, yet sweet combination that hints of something beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. This song always makes me take a deep breath, which means that it's just a little beyond kind of amazing.

Wham! - A Different Corner

Ok, I can hear the collective groan, but before you judge, you have to really listen to this song. Worst thing that happens is you get to laugh at a video of George Michael where he has a crazy mullet and a cool 80's sweater. Honestly, I have loved this song for so long that it's hard for me to tell anymore if it's really that good or if the years of loving it have made me grow a little too fond of it.

I'd say that love was a magical thing. I'd say that love would keep us from pain. Had I been there...

Two Door Cinema Club - Something Good Can Work

And on a different note, something completely different that will make you feel good and need to dance. I guess that I'm just all over the board in my emotions these days.

(Cover) Songs for Over Thinking Everything... (Brandi Carlile & R.E.M.)

Mix some crazy lusty hormones, a super emotional heart, and a lot of inappropriate snarky comments and then times it by my hyperactivity and you get the crazy town that is me lately. Mostly, I just want to tell my brain to shut up, give my heart a valium, and let things get back to the basics, but life is never quite that easy, is it? Anyway, here are some kick ass covers.
Brandi Carlile - Creep (Live In Boston)

This song is so sad. I really don't want to relate to it, but I have been there. Digging on someone so hard, craving their attention, trying to make them happy, doing goofy shit to screw up the situation, and then kind of realizing that it shouldn't be so difficult. I couldn't find the released version of it, but this video gives you an idea.

I don't care if it hurts. I wanna have control. I want a perfect body. I want a perfect soul. I want you to notice when I'm not around...

R.E.M. - Dream (All I Have To Do)

This is most definitely my favorite cover. Before the internet, I spent countless hours searching for this. Thank goodness for dreams and the loveliness they allow.

Dream, dream, dream...

Songs for #$@%& Valentine's Day... (Adele, Sheryl Crow, Nicole Atkins, & The Avett Brothers)

Bleh. Valentines Day. Hmpf.

Excuse my Eeyore moment, but the only thing that sucks more than being single on Valentine's Day is being single and hopelessly adoring someone that you just can't tell. Damn this silly heart, always trying to make my love life like some dumb RomCom. I’m kind of wishing that I was a little bit cooler of a heroine too.
Adele - Chasing Pavements

This is a seriously demented video. It kinda freaks me out, but it so perfectly explains my current state of confusion and indecision.

If I tell the world, I'll never say enough because it was not said to you, and that's exactly what I need to do...

Sheryl Crow - I Shall Believe

I love when Sheryl Crow sings really beautiful, honest, emotional songs, and this is really one of them. This song always gets me in the gut and it is near impossible for me to listen without giving it my complete Aretha Franklin (aka singing all dramatic and diva-like).

It seems like every time I try to make it right, it all comes down on me. Please say honestly you won't give up on me, and I shall believe...

Nicole Atkins - Cry, Cry, Cry

I usually pick songs because they match my emotional state, but I picked this one because I was excited about the new album.

You ought to ask her if two wrongs make a right cause our love's a dark disaster since I turned on the light...

The Avett Brothers - Murder in the City

I choke up a little bit every time I listen to this song. It's so sweet, honest, and vulnerable. It reminds me of the things that are really important in life and just how much love guides us (... even when we're hiding off on our islands). So, I take this as my Valentines Day song for 2011 and will focus on all of the love I do have in my life. You'll never hear me complain about getting to see close ups of those sweet, sweet Avett Brothers blues in the video.

Songs to... (Lisa Loeb, Alexi Murdoch, & The Avett Brothers)

The past week? No comment.

I feel like Doogie Houser, staring at the cursor and trying to tone down the cheese factor on my inner monologue. When times are tough, I can deal. I'm good with emotional, angry, and self-righteous. What throws me is when things are good. It feels especially dangerous when things are consistently good. What if the world isn't 100% suck and pushing that Sisyphus bolder of emotions up the hill? What if?

Lisa Loeb - Truthfully

I always kinda wanted to be more like Lisa Loeb... a cool indie chick with a guitar, funky glasses, and a heart that comes out sounding like butter when I sing. This song is really sweet and kind of perfect.

Truthfully, I really can’t explain, I’m floating, I’m smiling again... But the last thing that I want to do is to tell you that I’m right for you.

Alexi Murdoch - Orange Sky

The first time I heard Alexi Murdoch, he was opening for someone (errr... I can't seem to remember now but it was Sheryl Crow or Alanis...). Anyway, the point is that I can't even remember who else I saw that night because his voice and sound just completely blew me away. He was so handsome and his voice completely melted me. Still does every time I listen.

In your love, my salvation lies. In your love, in your love, in your love.

The Avett Brothers - Kick Drum Heart

Ahhh drums. I want to take the feeling this song gives me, wrap it up in a little box, and carry it around with me everywhere I go. Good times.

It's not the chase that I love, it's me following you...
